Type Trekking

Miriello collection of travel typography. Before they take down al the really good stuff and put up vinyl banners.

TypeTrekking

When I travel, I look for good bike shops, coffee roasters, the library and cool typography (among other things). I seem to connect to places where there’s at least a few of these things to be discovered. Typography may be the most telling of all. I call this quirky quest TypeTrekking. Old signs and hand-painted typography seem to be a sign of a past craft where the sign-maker needed to actually understand letter-forms, color, contrast…style. Vinyl banner and plastic channel letters, the signs of the modern strip mall, read well from the road at 70mph. But it’s hard to consider them anything more than a marketing devise. Surely nothing close to craft or the artistry of some of these jewels from Italy, Croatia, Malta, Sicily, Sardinia, Mexico and small town America.
